Gear lever gaiter and new carpets

I installed a new carpet set. I’m really struggling with fixing the metal retainer for the gaiter back in place. Is it just a matter of trimming the carpet? Does anyone have any tips?

I did struggle as well but remember it only on goes one way round, there's an 'F' stamped into the retainer. I used a bradawl to first poke around to find one of the holes in the tunnel and loosely fitted the retainer with one screw, it was then a matter of poking around though the other retainer holes to locate the screw positions. I might be an idea to initially use longer screws and once the carpet has been compressed change back to the originals.
