Piston sizes?

Post by PhilipW1039 »

I’m considering an engine rebuild for various reasons but what I’d like to know is, if it was rebuilt before and oversized pistons were fitted (I.e. bores were increased 20 thou), how would I tell? What I’m thinking is, if I decide to replace the pistons and the engine is rebored by 20 thou then I’d need extra 40 thou pistons. See what I mean?

Apologies if this is a very, very stupid question. My biggest job to date was head gasket replacement.

The top of the piston is normally stamped plus 0.020" or marked in a similar fashion.
To determine the size of piston required it is necessary to accurately measure the bores.
As I doubt that you will be re-boring the block yourself it may be best to leave the measuring, re-bore and supply of pistons to an engine reconditioning company.
