Sticking underfelt on sill/wheel arches?

Post by Mr Spigot »

I am about to put in new carpet and underfelt in my 2 door saloon and am unclear if underfelt needs to be stuck on the front wheel arches and sills, with carpet then stuck on top. Looking through the forums it seems some do and some don't, but I wonder if sticking 2 layers like this could be problematic; it certainly seems easier to stick the carpet directly to these areas, but not sure how much sound deadening would help. Any thoughts and advice appreciated.

Sound deadening might help quieten the car a bit but no underfelt was ever fitted to the sills and wheelarches of these cars from the factory. I find the footwell area rather lacking in space to begin with without added further obstruction from deeper carpets, so I wouldn't add further felt to those areas myself.

I did it on the wheel arches and never got the carpet to sit right at the edges due to it being raised slightly, this time around I'm skipping it!

Thanks for the advice. I have left the felt off the wheel arches and sills and the result looks good.
