Quarter light rubbers and latches

Post by Dougie212 »

Hello everyone.

My first of many posts here I think, having just this weekend collected my first step in classic car ownership - a 1958 Morris Minor 4 door saloon. I absolutely love it!! And can’t wait to start getting my hands dirty.
One things I’m keen to get sorted soon are the front quarter lights. The rubbers are perished and the latches are off (ones in the glovebox, the other isn’t with the car)

Ive read differing posts in various places about how easy and difficult it is to fit the rubbers and the catches and so was wondering if it’s easier to just replace the whole quarter light on both sides? They both still hinge so I did wonder if getting the rubber and catches would be a possibility.

I’m also just browsing trying to find the best place for parts so if it’s the rubber and catches or the full quarter light option where would everyone suggest going for the parts?

Thankyou in advance

Dougie.

COH Baines of Tunbridge Wells have a large selection of window rubbers, I haven’t used them for some time but they had a large selection for Minors, hopefully they still have.

Hi Les

Thanks for response. Do you think it’s an achievable repair to replace the rubbers and get some catches to put on then?

Thanks

Replacing the quarterlight rubbers is perfectly straightforward. New ones are available from most Morris Minor specialists. I have fitted new ones to my car with little difficulty. The catches are another matter. It can be done but requires some work and ability. The catch - or at least the bracket for it - is spot welded to the frame. These spot welds have broken off in your pictures. This can only be done with the glass removed - which is a bit tricky. I'm not sure that the rubber seal for the glass is available new(?) so you have to find an undamaged one or make a new one from a bicycle inner tube or suchlike. I have done this repair some years ago on one of my cars but a better alternative might be to purchase a complete replacement - IF you can find one. Good secondhand parts are naturally becoming harder to obtain now.

I had the broken catch problem with my steel frames - the bracket's had rusted off. Luckily I found some nos quarter lights but my original plan was to source stainless frames (possibly with broken off brackets) remove the glass to enable repairs to be carried out and then 'set' the glass back in with a neutral cure silicone sealant as years ago the glass/frame rubbers were non existent!

As others have stated, the rubbers are replaceable, although it can be a bit of a fiddle - I used red rubber grease to help them into place. When my catch broke off I simply replaced the quarterlight, being the simplest solution. Probably worth advertising on here for one - plenty knocking around at the back of people's garages, I expect. Or try club spares.....

Thankyou everyone for your responses!! It’s a daunting old thing this classic car ownership, so I really do appreciate the help.
I think I’ll go down the line of replacing the whole quarter light then. They’ve both gone so it’d be a pair I need.
I’ll have a look at where I advertise for them on here, thankyou and definitely have a look in club spares.
Thankyou all again!! Much appreciated!
