I have lost the spline positions on my torsion bars. I am refitting the bars and they are hanging loose.
I know that there is a known measurement taken from the bottom of the hole in the inner wing next to the shock absorber to the outer hole in the thick suspension arm that sets the splines about right. I think it is 16 plus a bit inches.
Anyone know it?
Thanks. John.

Forget about any other measurement.
The measurements in the diagram below is what you want.

Re: lazy torsion bar measurement please
Thanks Phil, but car is standing on a sloping gravel driveway.
That is why I asked for the other measurement. I would still like to know it. I Jacked up the thick arm on one side today and located the bottom trunnion pivot pin. It took 3 breeze blocks in the engine bay and me pulling down on the car to defeat the torsion bar. I am sure in the past it only took 2 breeze blocks. This is why I think my spline positions are out.
Thanks. John.

Re: lazy torsion bar measurement please
The car can be standing vertically and the measurements stated in the BMC manual will still be correct. It is the difference between the inner and outer pivot points that count.
Clamp a piece of wood across the bottom of the front chassis legs and use that for obtaining the 5 5/8" datum point.
The 16" or thereabouts will only give you a rough measurement whereas the BMC manual will give you a more accurate torsion bar setting.

Re: lazy torsion bar measurement please
Over here in the former colonies, the picture below is widely circulated & is used for setting the lower suspension arm on the torsion bar when the front suspension has been dismantled.
I’ve used this & the front suspension sits at a nice height when the car is put back on the ground.

Re: lazy torsion bar measurement please
That is the measurement I was thinking of oldred.
I used Phil's diagram too, and found that my splines were actually set right in the first place.
Thanks. John.
