Float level and sooty plugs ?

Post by alfie austin »

Hello,
I’m seeking some information/ advice…
I recently replaced the float valve in the carb’ lid (it was badly worn, ridged and sticking), adjusted as originally set. Now I notice plugs are repeatedly badly sooty, from clean to as photo in ten mile journey
Is float level a possible cause of rich mixture and hence sooty plugs

It could be, but have you set your mixture?

It could. If the float level is set too high, fuel is bypassing the valve, or the new valve is faulty, the mixture will be too rich.

Both are easy to check with the carb top removed, but either of the latter two may be evident by simply listening to the fuel pump.

With ignition on, it should be evident if float valve is still faulty (fuel pump still clicking, smell of petrol etc). Or could be unrelated reason like choke not fully returning to off position.
