63 4 door engine restoration.

Post by FosterS »

Right I bought a 63 1000, fully on the road in fair condition, with a 1098 engine a few month back with the idea to remove the engine over the winter and refurbish it.
Well I've just removed and stripped the motor talk about just in-time first removing the gearbox I found this

It doesn't show to well but the fron seal is leaking in the gearbox may as well renew the bearings as well

Nothing on the head but with the sump off I found this

Anyway long story short the oil pump is wrecked the camshaft is wrecked and one cam follower is wrecked.
The big end bearing look not to bad but the mains are shot.

Time for a regrind both are standard by the way.

My question to all is will this rear main cap still be OK to use

as you can see it has been marked by the crank and I can feel definite grooves in the surface all be it very faint.

The breather on the engine is totally emply (it looks as though its been cut open and emptied then re welded) so there should be no back pressure.

Just went to hone the cylinders to allow the fitting of new rings and found this,

Looks like that engine has had a rough life. Check it out carefully, you might figure on another lump to spend cash on.

I'm looking at the cost of a full lump instead of doing this one up, though the cyl's are only .20th over size and the crank is standard.

We’ll see which is the most cost effective.

I think the engine has been neglected for a number of years and the sludge has built up until it has found its way through the system with obvious results.
