Tracking

Post by Rourke »

I have just had both upper trunnions and one swivel pin replaced on a 1965 saloon, to find the steering wheel is not now centred - it's more twenty to two rather than quarter to three. I assumed I just need to realign the wheel but have been told this could indicate the tracking is out. Does this sound feasible? Thanks in anticipation.

You do need to check the tracking as replacing the trunnions and swivel will more than likley throw the tracking out.
I would recommend that the tracking is checked and adjusted as required.
Make sure that when adjustments are carried out to the tracking the track rods are adjusted equally - do not adjust only one side to get the tracking right as that is a sure way the throw the steering wheel off centre.
Only with the tracking done and with the wheels in the straight ahead position can the steering wheel can be centred.
Road test and see how the steering wheel sits with the car travelling in a straight line. If necessary you may have to re-adjust the steering wheel on the splines to get it absolutely correct.
