Post by Colin.beadle »

Chaps

I'm currently refurbishing my 1098traveller and have reached the stage where the rocker shaft is dismantled. I can get all but one pedestals off however there is one which appeRs to be fixed with a peg like mechanism..

What is it and his do I take this pedestal off the shaft please?

The rocker shaft pedestal at the rear, opposite end to the thermostat, has a Peg ( Part ... logue www.moss-europe.co.uk .

Soak some Plusgas dismantling fluid over night if it is loath to budge. The fluid will also help release the pedestal itself later.
A gentle tap with a hammer, cushioned with a lump of old wooden batten should break the dried out oil sealing it.Don't go mad with the hammer. The Peg is cheap to replace if you damage it whilst removing it.

The peg (Pt No: 2A258) you describe is the locating peg for the rocker shaft (Pt No: 12A950). It stops the rocker shaft moving fore and aft and from rotating. It is quite unusual for the peg to be seized in the pedestal :-?
It just unscrews and it is secured by the plate (Pt No:2A515) that goes on top of the rocker pedestal. Please be aware that the peg can be fitted to No:1 or No:2 pedestal dependent upon engine application. Make sure that you get the right rocker shaft if you intend to replace it. It is also important that you get the right pedestal in the right place because if you do not oil will not be able to reach the rocker shaft/rockers and wear will be rapid.
Most rocker shafts now supplied have the locating peg/hole in No:2 pedestal. When replacing a shaft which was originally located by No:1 pedestal move this pillar along and fit new oil feed pedestal (Pt No:12G1927) in No: 1 position. The original No: 2 pedestal (Pt No: 12G1926) is discarded. You can drill the pedastals to suit the application if you like and that task is relatively easy. see photo below and taken from the Vizard book - How To Modify your Mini.
If your rocker bushes are worn and your rockers are the pressed steel type they cannot be re-bushed  They have to be replaced.
If you cannot get any other of the rockers off the shaft that is a good indicator of worn bushes/shaft.
May be easier to buy a replacement complete rocker shaft assy.
Dependent upon the info source the pedestals are also referred to as pillars 8) [frame]Image[/frame]

As above -I've never known that peg to be tight! It spends it's life soaked in hot oil. Unusual for the pressed steel rockers to wear significantly, although you may want to 'stone' the pads smooth - but the shaft wear can be impressive !
