Third time lucky??

Post by Boomlander »

Traced an annoying rattle to a loose water pump bearing by moving the fan blades back and forth.
No problem...ordered new water pump and gaskets - removed old parts - fitted new gasket and pump.... fan pulley would not fit onto pump flange! Tried pulley on old pump - no problem, new pump flange is about 1mm larger than the old one. I would guess that it is probably of foreign origin but useless nevertheless.
Discovered that new pulleys are unavailable or ridiculously expensive so bit the bullet once again and ordered another new pump from Moss this time along with new pulley to flange screws (forgot to mention that one screw stripped the thread in the old pump flange to add to the misery!).
Also found a decent looking used pulley on Ebay so with all this I should be able to complete a job that should have only taken a couple of hours instead of wasting my whole Sunday morning with nothing to show for my efforts!

I'm not aware of any change in the size of the pump/pulley during the whole life of A series manufacture. I would send the 'wrong' pump back.....

Quite right Roy, the new pump with its oversized flange will be going back to the supplier if the second pulley arrives and does not fit cleanly. I know that the pump itself is not overly expensive but you would expect to be able to fit such replacement units easily and they should conform to original specifications as a matter of course. :(

I have heard of this problem before and the cure was to fit either two gaskets or a thicker one.

Annoying. I suspect the Moss pump won't have been made in the UK either though.
Glad to be back!

I don't understand how 2 gaskets would cure a fitting problem between the pulley and the hub as there is no gasket there.

The problem pump is identical to the one on the car - just has a slightly larger hub/flange so will not push all the way on to the fan pulley - very strange (and bloody annoying!).
I suppose as a last resort I could reduce the hub diameter on the bench grinder but is It worth the effort? :-?

Agreed - received another pump from Moss today and the pulley fits its hub perfectly.
The two pumps that fit are marked "County" on the body, the rogue one from Bull Motif is unmarked and also has some quite large casting lumps on the inner face of the impellor teeth. I will definitely be sending it back for a refund!
