Wiper spindle

Post by Peetee »

Prevention is better than cure they say. So in the interests of covering all potential sources of leaks I tried to get the old rubber bushes off the wiper spindles. One has disassembled OK but the other spindle just rotates with the nut.
Anyone have any ideas how to losen it?

Maybe I've misunderstood your post , but I can't see how anything could rotate with the nut as it is fitted directly to the wheel box which can't move if the wiper assembly is complete.

I had this with a Mini. The thread on the wheelbox spindle corroded and left an area with no thread on which allowed the nut to just rotate without undoing. I had to get a nut-splitter on the nut and break it off. Then I replaced the wheelbox for one with a decent thread.

Maybe your spindle has corroded off underneath allowing the whole thing to spin??

Do you mean the rubber bush actually inside the wheelbox[Iwouldnt have thought that you could get replacements] or do you mean the elliptical shaped gasketsthat fit between the chrome finisher and the body.

Yes. Above this finisher is a large nut that holds the wiping assembly tight against the car body. As I try to undo this it just rotates the threaded section and doesn't loosen. I have tried holding the internal spindle assembly directly below the chrome finisher (hidden behind the glovebox) but this is not rotating with the nut and spindle.

This is not happening with mine. I can quite clearly see that the visible threaded section (about 3mm proud of the nut) is rotating with the nut.
This suggests that this threaded section is seperate from the section that tightens against the underside of the bonnet hinge panel. I suppose if these two were an interference fit or the whole thing has fractured then the wiper drive column and boss would have dropped away underneath (it's the drivers side, therefore the 'end' of the assembly) - or is it held to the body by any other fixings?
