Cobra immobilser, with stickers in the windows, and Large Disklok on my 3 spoke steering wheel for me and Hugo.
The Diskloks are £90-£100 new and if you look on fleabay to buy a used one they are not much cheaper...because they are so good. They keep their price (and value very well). I think cost me £75. It can be a bugger to get on and off for me and I've got the key. I have to have the drivers side door open to slide it off  and I put it on the back seat.

After joining this thread I looked into the stats about car theft...
Interestingly - 60% of car thefts in this country are where the thief HAS your keys. Whether taken from your house in a burglary, robbed from your 'person' or stolen when the car is left idling outside your house (the keys and car together). Only a small percentage of car thefts are actual break-ins e.g. cracking your door lock or smashing a window. So if your deterrents are very visible the thieves will just walk by and try another car. BUT looking at these stats I am wondering is there pattern to how classics are stolen? Moggies in particular, especially original looking ones as opposed to hot rod versions (which may look more exciting to nick). Original looking moggies may not be ideal for boy racers to rag round the streets, mine isn't anyway. So are we targeted by specialist thieves who know all the immobiliser, dead-switch, battery cut out methods who just tow our cars away on flatbeds and 'sort' them out in a lock-up somewhere? 2% of thefts...in fact.

The theft of a car left idling outside on a cold morning is now becoming more prevalent now the weather is getting colder, especially for those like me who have a daily runner. I also hide my keys at night in case we have 'night home invasion', which in fact is quite rare as the vast majority of burglaries are done through the day.

So make sure your deterrents are in their face.

These must be fairly recent stats, decent car security is quite a new phenomena.

For a visual deterant I have just picked up a half moon steering lock off a car boot for a fiver, made for halfords I think....it fits my large moggy perfectly once the inner spacers on it are removed....some years ago I had a friend who had a garage forcourt which had the old Austin maestro s on the front...always being nicked....so these half/ full moon jobbies were put on every one...not one was stolen again....here is a video online somewhere where it took around 28 mins to get the half moon off with an angle grinder....around 35 mins for the full moon to be taken off....although I don t think the full moon will fit due to the steering wheel being so close to the windscreen...

The 60% mentioned above really only applies to high value modern cars, you
don't need a micro chipped ign key for a Minor!

Bit like the average salary, 3 workers on 50+k & 7 on 16k, you can
make numbers say anything!!

Security wise, a decent steering wheel thing, something like illustrated
below - plus interior handles removed, van wise, a rotating "shim"
secured by a bolt to stop the rear dr handle shaft being pulled out when
the 2 philips headed bolts are unscrewed.

Also affix an interior bar to lock the rear drs, though you'll
have to climb in the back everytime!!

Even if a toe-rag smashed the windows, would STILL be faced
with entry problems![frame]Image[/frame]
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

kennatt wrote: Fri Nov 08, 2013 3:53 pm so you can sleep easy, and enjoy being a minor owner AFTER you have spend hundreds of pounds on an fancy immobiliser, took the steering wheel to bed with you,

put the caravan security post up,after concreting it in,made sure the moderns are parked in front of it,moved the battery to the boot,

unchained the hungry dog, fitted the steering wheel clamp in the bed just incase they sneak into the bedroom and find the wheel under the duvet.,

fitted the wheel clamps,

Removed all the handles.Padlock and chain on the bonnet,

Fitted the chain round the axle to the eye bolt concreted into the garage floor
,made up a fitment to the solenoid,
fitted 20 secret switches
made sure you arn't being followed from shows(Use a different route each time),had all the glass etched,

you could also fit a tap to the tank so that you could drain the petrol, and carry it with you to the pub in a can,fit a detachable petrol pump, fits in a handbag nicely, take all the wheel off and lock them in the garage, :o :o

unsrew the gear lever after putting it into reverse with the car backed up against the wall of the nearest police station.

Then get the bus everytime you wanted to go out knowing that the old girl would be still there to LOOK AT,when you got back home. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Think I'll take the chance with my one secret switch, and when I leave it anywhere isolated I put the rotor arm into my pocket, just incase they try to hotwire it.OHH NO Iv'e just told all the little scrotes now, halfords will run out of rotors now :D :D
I like your thinking! However your plan is still vulnerable to being thwarted by a determined car thief. I would suggest dismantling the whole vehicle & placing all the bits in 4 separate alarmed locations, all under lock & key & guarded by CCTV & watched 24 hours a day!

Here in the States, the best car anti-theft device is a manual transmission. Hardly anyone these days knows how to use it.

But as a visible deterrent - you won't beat a large/angry/hungry/slavering dog inside the car.....
