Repro bulb holder won't take bulbs?

Post by beelzibus »

Is there a problem with the repro bulbholders on wiring looms not taking bulbs for the speedo? I seem to be having some issues, is it me or are they known to be rubbish. If so what's the solution?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

It's an original, as removed from the tails of the old loom I left attached to the speedo on stripdown. On further investigation it seems that the ridges inside the repro bulbholders are just crudely done and as such not up to the job. Looks like I shall be splicing in the old bulbholders onto the new loom. Not exactly what I had in mind, I figured a new loom would minimise this kind of messing around.

I looked at the new looms and decided to use an original one on my pick-up because of the bulb holders. I had to soak the old harness in soapy water to remove all the dirt and then hang it out to dry for a few days. Came up remarkably well. A new loom would have been the simpler option though.
In your case probably best to fit the old ends to the new loom, if the fitting inside the bulb holder can be reused. Or as you say leave some wire on the end of the old holders and solder to new loom. You can get this heatshrink stuff that you slide onto the wire before soldering, and then slide back over the join, apply some heat (hairdryer) to it and it shrinks back to insulate the wire. You may of course know all this!

Ive had issues with these as well, the oil light on my traveller keeps falling out as the new bulb holder is plastic with a metal ring to hold in place, the ring falls out of the plastic. I have glued it in place and seems ok at the moment, but not as good as the old part
