Post by Mark W »

Hi
As a new morris owner with a 1961 convertable i could do with some advice

The front suspention seems to be short of oil
But i am unsure what is best to use
And where to get it

Car is being used with 2 adults and 2 kids so is full and would look to heavy duty type settings

Any help appreciated

Hi, You could use either SAE30, 40 or 50 oil for the dampers. SAE 40 is advised in other threads, personally I have gone with SAE 30. Don't just do the fronts, replace the oil in the rears too, you will notice a vast improvement.
Be aware though that when you drain the dampers to replace the oil you may find that there is not much oil in them. This could be down to the seals leaking at the front of the arms. In which case you may need to source some replacements or just top them up every now and again.

Good Luck!
Richard

Get the SAE 40 if you can (that's NOT 10W40...) - and flush it through a couple of times before closing them up. Try a local motorcycle place (but don't be conned in to expensive 'fork oil' ) or get this from ebay.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BSA-Norton-Tr ... 460b820282
You really need to take the rear dampers off to do the job. Also make SURE the damper holding bolts are tight -and that all the rubber bump stops are present and correct.
