Moggy Minor 2 Door Saloon 1967 Project

Post by peetee59 »

I have posted many questions regarding my car,and had good feedback and was happy with the response.Well now Minor fans having taken the wings off and trying to get the cover plate of the sill area,i had to grind it away, and to my horror i found what i can only express as being as rotten as they come.I paid and i am ashamed to admit it to others, except on here,£1450.00 for a car that drove nicely back from scotland, and when i take it to pieces with the intention of respraying it (ONLY I THOUGHT),i find it is rotten to hell.I have only checked the drivers side, and if you look at the pictures i will put up,you can see the extent of the problems i now find.I did take of the wing on the nearside and found at the bottom of the inner wing, there was a hole and staring at me was a tin can of some discription.I feel disallusioned now, and i do now worry what i might find on the other side, when i cut that away.....Anyway its now been put on a sorn and now it has become a restoration project,i will put up pics as i go along.(Watch this space)

I hop you dont mind me saying but, EASY BOY - stop cutting before you have no reference points left to get the new panels to line up!! I see you have braced the door gap, but even so you havent left much other metal to add strength. Personally I would have got the inner step in place before all the boxing panel was removed to get exact height and placing.

Point taken,my next goal is to fit the inner sill step tomorrow, and work from there.I do understand what you are saying, and i have to say!!!! this is by far the biggest thing i have ever undertaken,i am in new territory ,so any help or suggestions i will take on board.I have taken several measurements too,and as this is my first ever restoration,i know this has become a learning curve,i have had help from 2 of our members and one actually came to see me and help sort out a direction as to what to do,I think i have maybe been too hasty as you suggest,in taking too much out at once,as i say tomorrow i will get back to the job in hand, and then i will submit some more pics for all to see,,,,,,,anyone who cares to comment and help me with the task i have in hand, will be taken in hand and used to sort my resto out,,,,I thank you all who have helped,i will get there.....My experience is with the surface bodywork and painting her,to get her back to what she looked like many years ago.Only much better. When i bought this car,i never in my life thought i would find what i have done up till now,i was certainly ripped off, however this car has been like this for years as i could see by the ammount of rust and decay,it was sad to see,,,anyway i will get her looking better,,,,,,watch this space.

Glad you didnt take offence at me saying that!

Ive restored quite a few minors, generally I would try and get the floor inner step area into good shape then move on to the front pillar and inner wing area and lastly work on the sill and boxing plate. Even rotten metal still has a bit of structural strength.

Have a look at this chaps photos, really good neat work here and the pic of the front edge of the sill structure gives a great idea of what should be there.

For even more inspiration have look at Taupes traveller and what he started with! Most of the sill structure is the same on the traveller, the difference is pretty obvious when you check out the pics.
