Putting the horn push back where it belongs...?

Post by peatbrown »

The previous owner of my car (1968 Saloon) has removed the centre horn push, got a horn push from somewhere else and fastened it to one of the screws that holds on the heater control front? This is a long way down when you are driving and 6' 3" tall!

 Problem is I would like to put it back where it came from, the centre of the wheel. Now, I changed my black two spoke wheel for the older type with three metal arms and I understand the centres are differant. I don't mind putting the original wheel back on to get the horn to work.

The connector is on the brass spring on the steering column to attached the wires to - but what wires and where do they come from...?

Can anyone help me get my horn back (clean answers only please)? And I have already heard all the viagra jokes ta!

From memory, 12volts is supplied to the Horn. this is then fed back to the switch on a purple/black wire (might be a different colour on earlier cars).
This wire connects to the springy contact.
The springy contact feeds wire to a slip ring which is on the column shaft but insulated from it. On the back of the slip ring there should be a spring loaded wire which then feeds up the hole in the middle of the column shaft.
I'm not sure if the early switch is the sam as the later, but presumably it will just earth the wire to the steering column, creating a circuit for the horn.
