Tracking jig
Here's a few photos of my jig. Adjustable screws on both sides so it can be used in tight spaces from either side.
Sliding joint at the front
Folds up nicely for storage.

Re: Tracking jig
It's actually very simple.
Here's a link to the bits and pieces-it like a newer Meccano.

Re: Tracking jig
You really should only measure the front - then roll forward 1/2 turn - and measure the SAME rim points at the rear........ If you are pretty sure about the rims - then there won't be much wrong with your method. Test is - if you take 3 sets of measurements in a row - are they all the same ??

OK, with a bit of squinting, I see what you mean.

Re: Tracking jig
Gotta be a way of doing this with them cheap laser pointer things - like the garages do.
Just need a mount for the laser pens on each wheel and a ruler to shine them at infront. Thered be a lot less fabrication involved in making frames etc.. Just a bit of board with some steel rules hot glued to it and two cheap laser pointers.

What would Macgyver do..?

Re: Tracking jig
This is the tricky bit then as it needs to rest on the rim edges at the mid point, maybe some small rare earth magnets to hold and a pound shop spirit level to check it is parallel to the floor?Just need a mount for the laser pens on each wheel

Free!
I like the idea but doubt there is a garage in London where the concept would be recognised
