Moggies down under?
Does anyone know what the classic car scene is like in New Zealand - and especially driving them there?
I understand that Australian regulations mean driving classic cars in Oz is very difficult (I hear tales of not being allowed to drive after dark, but that may be just some states), but I wondered if rules in New Zealand are any more liberal?
Can you drive classics without restrictions? What's the situation regarding road tax and insurance?
Perhaps there might be some MMOC members in Oz or NZ that could shed some light on this?
And has anyone shipped their moggy to NZ or Oz? How easy was it, and how much did it cost?
Any info much appreciated.
Thanks all

Why hide the answer in a PM MIke - if you put it on the forum we can all learn - and it will be there to be found in the future by others via the search function.

I was giving out personal information on my contacts in Aus and NZ which I did not think was appropriate on an open forum

You would find NZ a good place to own a Minor, especially in the South Island (with a good heater) where the traffic is less and there are lots of great Morris Minor roads.

Road tax is less for vehicles over 40 years and classic vehicle insurance is available, with certain restrictions such as the vehicle not being your primary car. It is way less than the UK, $NZ90 last time for full cover on its restored value. You will find standards for the vehicle quite tight in what you can do or have done. This web site will give you an idea. ( http://www.lvvta.org.nz/ ) There is more info here ( http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/facts ... s-vehicles ).
Also, Minors are allowed out at night.

Re: Moggies down under?
I drive my mog as an everyday car. It has full registration and insurance like any modern. No restrictions apply. I'm still running it without any modification.
Re: Moggies down under?
I know someone who has classic and modified Mercs in Queensland. Classic is no problem. Modifications are discussed & agreed in advance with a govt engineer then inspected to see that they are done before car is given certification.
New South Wales is a bit stricter but from his point of view only prevents him fitting air suspension.

Imports to NZ have to be sterilized to remove any foreign plant seeds, insects etc etc. It is probably easier to buy new carpets than to clean the existing ones.
