Choke return spring?

Post by 67-2door »

My 1968 minor has a return spring on the carb end of the choke cable, is this correct? The choke knob is quite hard to pull out & springs back in if you let go due to spring pressure.
I've just fitted a new choke cable & the inner cable is a solid cable rather than multistrand so surely it'll pull the choke on & push it off without the need for a spring?
Thanks.
Neil.

There is a coil choke return spring on the pivot bar which is sufficient to close the choke. When the end of the cable is fitted to the clamp it should be twisted as it is clamped so that when the choke knob is pulled out and twisted and it will lock in place and will return when the knob is untwisted. Alternatively there is the tried and tested mehod of using a clothes peg which when not in use is clipped behind the rear view mirror. Points are lost for using a plastic peg instead of a wooden peg.

Normally the choke cable is solid wire, not braided like the throttle cable.
Shouldn't need a spring as being solid there is no slack play.

You may need to unclamp twist a bit and reclamp to get the proper action that Mike describes, I need to do the same since I last had the carb off.

I bought a pattern cable and it doesn't have the twist lock like the original it just pulls out and relies on friction to lock it but of course the return spring overcomes the friction & the choke just goes off if you let go of it.
I cant see a problem in removing the return spring & relying on the cable to turn the choke off but does anyone else think this would be a problem?

No - I don't see it causing a problem if you take it off.......... Just make sure the choke goes right off - with the switch knob still ~10 thou away from the stop!!

Have you got just the coil spring or is there an additional spring?

There's a long spring that hooks through a hole in the choke arm on the carb and the other end hooks onto the exhaust clamp (along with the throttle return spring).

Well - that will certainly make sure the choke is OFF.

That is the spring that is causing the problem, it should not be there. The only choke spring on an HS2 carb is a small coil spring on the choke linkage pivot bar.

The spring on the exhaust clamp should go to the accelerator cable .

Unless you look carefully you would not know that the coil spring was fitted.

Hi all. Also got problem with a new choke cable. The garage fitted it and they are 200 miles from me.
Its never worked properly and I have to use cloths pegs (wooden)
So when I twist it it makes no difference.
Maybe they didn't fit it at the carb end properly
Some one mentioned it has to be twisted before being clamped.
Can someone go into detail please.
Is it twisted to the left or right and by how much.
Thanks

Hello. The inner cable must be twisted about half a turn clockwise (when looking at the end of the cable) before tightening the nut which clamps it in position.
