What do I class my Morris as

Post by oldmod1968 »

Hi, If I add a 1275 Engine to my Morris 1000 2 door should I call it "customised" or just a two door when entering events ?

2 door! It's a very common 'upgrade' to the engine - that's all.

Any BMC sourced upgrades using a the original type running gear will put your car into the Modified category. Customised is basically an anything goes category

Well - there will not be many 'standard' cars around I guess - an unleaded head will make the car 'modified' on that basis!!

Usually as soon as you do anything to the suspension you are classed as "modified" i.e. telescopic shock absorbers, anti roll bar etc.

There should be some published rules on Modified class. Certain upgrades such as unleaded conversions, seat belts, halogens etc are permitted in standard class (but not concours) and disc brakes and the previous mentioned mods are permitted in Modified. JLH type engine transplants would be in the Customised class

Whoops looks like I caused a debate!

Really all I want to do is carry out minor mods . In my case I will fit :

> a towbar assume that doesn't change status?
> a webasto sun roof - assume that is ok because it was available at the time?
> Will fit oil, water and rev counter in the drivers glove box - I assume that is OK because all were available at the time as I am using a Mini type Pod revcounter from the sixties?
> brake servo - may be a modification as it wasnt available at the time?
> Alloy or Midget Wheels - that is a Mod but is it drastic enough to change its satus.

The dilema is do I fit my 1275 midget engine? I have a full history of the car from new, know all the owners and am in two minds about removing an engine that came with the car. In many ways without the history the decision would be much easier. The car will never be concours and right now is a bit tatty and being welded to make it solid. Any thoughts if you were me!

BTW does an engine change make a lot of difference to the Insurance per year (I am 59!)

It sounds as though you have the same ideas as I have carried out on my rather tatty Traveller, Midget running gear, Wolseley bakes, some extra gauges, wide wheels and some comfy front seats. For rally judging which I have not got a hope in hell of winning anything, it falls into the Modified class.
No it should not affect your premium, it did not affect mine, cost the same for two cars as it did for one

As you have the full history of the car I would keep the original engine so it could be re-fitted if reqd at a later date and go ahead with fitting the 1275 engine.
