Searching for duplicate ignition key - help please!

Post by Gormley »

I need a duplicate ignition key. It makes me ill at ease not to have a spare, but the key doesn't have any ID numbers on it, so I'm not sure what series it might be even. Is this series recognisable by the shape of the key (picture attached)? All this one says is "Curtis USA UN-59". Perhaps the latter is the ID number? Any ideas greatly appreciated. Obviously, I'm new at this game![frame]Image[/frame]

I just took mine to a key cutter within a shoe menders and got another cut. Works fine. This way you're sure it will fit the existing lock. If you buy another key with the right number on the chances are with the age of the lock the key won't fit it as the lock will be worn with age, and the key shape slightly changed.

I have a key similar to yours but it is a Union fk series but it seems the same shape and size. Here is a website that supplies the blank keys so you could get one cut at your local locksmith. Click on the link below, i hope this helps.

Most Minor locks can be opened with a screwdriver - they are so worn with age! You may want to consider buying new locks and keys to match.......

Passed this on to my mate who owns a key cutting and engraving establishment ( http://www.cromertrophies.co.uk ) and he supplied the following information

"Given that am not registered, perhaps you could answer for me as follows:

Curtis is a manufacturer of key blanks, UN-59 is simply their reference for this particular key.

It is a Union FS key, which was commonly used on a wide range of vehicles from this era, and which you’ll be able to get cut at any keycutter.

If you buy the blank at what seems a cheap price online & then take it in to a shop to be cut you will end up paying more!

I’d charge £4.25 for this one, including supplying the blank."

I intend to live forever.....so far so good

Thanks for all your considered replies. I thought it was going to be difficult because I didn't have the key's serial number, but I successfully had a duplicate key cut today.
