make sure that the move firmly with no soft spots. get hold of it and push them across there movement. they should be firm resistance. hold them upright, all the way back and forth

another thing to look out, for gently move back and forth there should be no freeplay movement

3.5k miles later they are now worse than the ones I took off. They were got from a 'reputable' supplier that advertises in the mag.
Speak to the supplier most of the ones in the mag will change items if the go faulty in a short period of time eg Bull Motif, East Sussex, Mgm etc.

Which supplier did you use? Any supplier can be let down by their sub suppliers, but it helps to know which ones as some take more pride in quality than others...
