Get in touch with the DVLA and they ought to be able (following proof of right of ownership &c.) provide a duplicate V5... not had to do it myself. Get in touch with Swansea, or your local Vehicle Records Office, and they should sort you out.
Failing that, someone on here must have been in the same situation once... collectiveley there's around half a milennia of experience on here.

Getting a replacement V5 is very easy - especially when it already had a V5 (it must have had one before, otherwise they couldn't sell the reg)
It usually takes 1 phoncall to DVLA, but as you don't know the reg number, it may be a couple of calls etc..
Without proof of sale from the previous registered owner it will add a delay as they have to write to the last known owner and wait for a reply. If the guy who sold it to you was actually the last registered owner, then pass his details to DVLA (and the proof of sale) as well to speed the process up.
If you get stuck after lots of conversations with them, give the board a shout.
Really the last owner was being naughty - DVLA will send a replacement V5 at 2 days notices to the registered keeper so he should have done that (if he actually 'lost' it. Often this is just a story because they never bought the car, they just 'found' it)
