Trafficator switch wiring

Please help. I need to fit a trafficator switch to my car (it's a brown bakerlite switch with a red light in the centre) and I have no idea which wires would go to which terminals. I believe the car may have non standard wiring for this system as it does't tally with any of the wiring diagrams that I have. There are 4 wires, Brown, red, black and green with a brown stripe. Any ideas??

Check the colour of the wires going out to the semaphores or indicators and hopefull they will tally with the ones at the switch. Have you worked out which one is the power source?

Thanks for the reply. Sadly the semaphore wires have a braided outer insulation that is white, so no clues there. Is there just one supply cable? So should I expect 12v on 1, then continuity to each respective semaphore on the other 2 and and then the 4th wire to earth?

There are usually just 3 wires, the semaphores will earth through the body. If you find the power source which should be green and come from the fuse box and test the other wires in turn and see if you get any life in the semaphores. If they havent been working for a long time they may need a little assistence, be gentle they may be seized! It may be easier to remove them from the body (only 2 screws) and test them on a battery, then you will know if the wirings at faults or the arm.

Do you have a manual? The wiring diagram shows the power going to 3 and 4 on the switch, these are the bottom 2 brass terminals. You will need to connect these two, we used a washer cut down between them. Terminal 5 goes to the right and 2 to the left. That leaves the top brass terminal no1. This powers the warning light, you need to take two very small wires between from 2 and 5 to power the this.

Its much easier to do than explain!
