Either it's faulty - take it back - or it's running out of line, which is much more likely! You need to make sure all the pulleys are running dead in line. Usually - the alternator needs a washer or two between the front mounting lug and the water pump - to make the pulley run true to the other two.

Also the fan belt shouldn't be too tight,
I think there should be an inch of play on the longest run of the belt.

An inch is too much! Alternator needs to be quite tight - but not 'bow' tight!

Dang! Here I was, hoping that 'alternator wine' would be a new recipe to go along with 'master cylinder beer'...sorry, couldn't resist. Should have...

Not at all, I was wondering what sort of press was needed to get the juice out - might be a bit painful for trampling with bare feet!

Funnily enough I was going to say it shouldn't be bar tight and you shouldn't get a low C if you twang it.
Too tight and you will not only get a whine but knacker the bearings in quite short order.

Not really - the belt soon stretches out until it's happy. But of course - its' now weakened -and likely to snap quite soon!
