Parcel Shelf

Post by MColes »

Now that the car is up and running again I decided to clean out the car.

Looking at the parcel shelf under the dashboard and noticed there was a cardboard cover screwed to the shelf (is there usually? :-?) that looked a bit tatty so I took it off.

I then noticed that the bar that supports the front of the shelf had been cut behind the steering column and a metal brace put across it to hold it back together.

Don't know why I didn't notice this before and haven't a clue why anyone would want to do it.

I asume that you are refering to the short parcel shelf. I don't kmow if they are still available. It should not be necessary to cut the supporting bar especially as they are probably not readily available either. You could be into welding it together

Yes the short parcel shelf. A previous owner has actually cut a piece out of the bar, directly behind and about the width of the steering column.

As I said I have no idea why and I'd agree that they are most probably like hens teeth to get hold of.

Is the cover just to hide the botch job or would it have been on there from new?

The damage to the parcel shelf is most likely from battery acid. My quess is the shelf was cut down from the bigger version that was introduced sometime during 1959. As I recall the older ones have a much smaller cut out for the wheel well - also indicating that it's a newer one cut down.
