maintaining a battery

Post by silverdorking »

Anyone got any recommendations for battery maintainers, which can be left to keep an occasionally used MM fully charged and ready to go? I believe there are some devices that can also relieve sulphation and others that can maintain a number of batteries.
All suggestions appreciated

No need for such a thing! The battery will hold a charge just fine. My TR7 lies dormant all winter, with battery connected and clock ticking. I roll it out every 3 months or so and it starts up just fine. If the battery won't hold a charge - either it's past it's sell-by date, so buy a new one - or there is something draining the current away. To test for that - disconnect the battery when the car is lying, and only connect it when you want to run it!

I've got fed up of replacing batteries on long dormant cars. 3 months shouldn't kill a good battery but it can damage it.

I have not got a load of solar battery chargers. They won't charge a low battery but will keep the charge maintained to prevent the chemical devolution.

My Minor also lies dormant most of the winter - has done for many many years now _ push it in/out thje garage as required without starting up. The battery will be ~ 7 years old now - still starts the car up fine when required!
