I've borrowed this picture to show the area I am talking about... On our new Traveller this area is a bit soggy and needs attending to. What is the best way to deal with it? It is only an area of no more that 3-4". Can it be treated and filled etc or is it a piece that must be replaced. If I need to replace, how much of the car needs to come apart?

Depends on the rest of the joint really, you could sand back to good wood and use wood hardener and see what happens (will need a good soaking)
Safe sure answer is to replace if its not sound, and then it depends on the adjoining wood rear bar and top rail.
Thanks Jonathon. I assume you use the hardener then filler on top? The rot does not appear too deep and the other wood around it is solid.... If I were to replace would the roof have to come off?

If the hardener doesn't turn the whole effected area hard then simply replace the wood. I wouldn't use filler on wood especially in this vital area. To work on this joint effectively , yes the roof is better removed to allow clear access and assessment of the extent of rot.
