Lining up Guards

Brixton, I think you mean Fweddy in the last post.

Fweddy, we have a knowledgeable fellow here who used to work on the Morris Minor assembly line at Zetland (Sydney) putting together the CKD kits. Apparently each car was sent over disassembled to simply be put together with all parts supplied. However, most panels had slight differences, so to assemble 1 car, various panels were swapped from other kits until a satisfactory fit was obtained.
This resulted in some very good cars, but eventually some very bad cars which had to have panel repairs done at the factory.

It's common here when replacing panels to have to rework seemingly undamaged panels to obtain the same fit as the original.

Is it possible to try another bonnet for fitment?

OK Scott - Simular story here with the CKDs - I know the last LCVs were just thrown together - As long as it worked it was ok. (as mine is a 1973 it's one of the very last).

I could maybe try another bonnet but I tend to think its a guard problem and they are getting harder to come by here now and very costly. I could have the originals repaired but I replaced (and had minor repairs) as it worked out cheaper. Maybe harder tho.

We'll figure it yet!

sorry scott. all those rubbers should be easy in parcil post. even the wings these days. the thing about the wings is that shipping somtimes regard size rather then weight as a pricing structure

Some rubber parts are reasonable in Aust. but most are cheaper in UK. I saved considerably on the last restoration & now the Aussie dollar is a bit stronger, will do again (hopefully) soon.
The structural parts (floors, sills, etc) are all locally made. The Sri Lankan/English stuff is available from the Morris Minor centres here but its usually very expensive.

Regarding rubbers - I have the Aust catalogue and here in NZ there is a ready source of all those bits - infact the chap in Christchurch has just expanded his range on new bits. Now its just a matter of me getting around to getting them - and that will happen when I need them.

Yesterday I had another go at looking at the guards and their lineup. After talking to a panelbeater friend (actually a vintage car restorer) he had a few tips for me.

I had packed the drivers side out to fit right which caused the bonnet gap to be too wide so I took the packing out and shifted the door right in at the top which did flick out the bottom rear corner as I mentioned earlier. Then I put a block at the top rear of the door and pushed the bottom in (warping the door). Then played with the fit and with slight packing for one guard - now both sides fit almost perfect and my bonnet gap is hardly noticable.
