Fitting new carpet

Post by Squiggle »

Sorry if it's already been described in detail on here. I have had a bit of a look.

Any tips on fitting new [Newton C] carpet with one and a half fully working hands please!

Don't say, get someone else to do it

Have managed to get most of the old carpet out.
Can get the front seats out ok too.

Bit disappointed that the holes for the pedals/dip switch weren't cut out and reinforced as with the bit that goes around the handbrake.

Thanks.

Dont glue bits down if you don't have to! IIRC only the sill pieces need glueing down. Laying out the bits before you start should help, are there no instructions? At least the newton sets fit pretty well.

I only stuck the sill pieces and the curved (slit) sections for the front wheel arches and I found it went on quite well using a wallpaper roller to iron it down! Without the glue it would look a bit baggy. I used the spray adhesive and masked up every where I didnt want it - seems to stick quite well
The main pieces are held down with the press studs supplied and I have fitted the floor part in the original carpet fitting holes using 6BA srews and nuts/washers underneath (waxoyled)
When complete it looked fine but felt a bit hard so I removed the large floor bits and laid some carpet underfelt (in bits) underneath which is held in position once the carpet is clipped in, so now it feels as good as it looks!

I totally agree with what Alan says - spray adhesive is much better - you may need to lift carpet in the future using something more permanent may ruin carpet for future lifting. I have fitted the soundeadening underlay under the carpet and the difference in noise is fantastic. The press studs are fine if your floor has not had to be welded but my studs went years ago before I had the car so not an option.

Spray glue is the key if you give areas a little waft of spray it just keeps the carpet in place, but they can be moved later without damaging the carpet.

Thanks for all the tips.

I like the technical term 'waft of spray' :)

I am just plucking up the courage to do the same job myself. The tricky bit is undoing the handbrake cable stops where they go through the prop shaft tunnel, feeding the cables through the holes you have made in the carpet, then bolting the cable stops through the new carpet. This is the bit where you need six foot long double jointed arms.
Warning. Don't do it over a gravel drive!
For the uninitiated the handbrake cable adjusters are above the carpet on the Series MM and below the carpet on the Minor 1000.
I agree with your comments about having to cut out the pedal holes and dip switch holes etc. On my previous set they were ready cut. I have kept my old carpets as a template. I had a word with Mr. Newton at the Nat. Rally about it.

The lack of holes reminded me of the hole I cut for the steering column - it was off centre and looked horrid! but I found a black aerosol cap and cut it down to about 3/8 long and a centre hole for the spline. I removed the column from the rack spline and put the cap on (dished side down) and bolted the column back.
This unexpected mod makes for quite a good looking finish and has the bonus of hiding the oil stain which will undoubtedly soak into the carpet!

Oh crumbs, if Maestro Perry is having to pluck up courage, then I'm well nervous. And his arms are longer than mine!

I had a word with Mr Newton on the phone about it. I don't understand why they aren't pre-cut as I thought they are ordered specific to the model of the car. What did he say to you?

Would you have time to create a paper template [from your old carpets] please Mike? I could send you some brown packing paper to use. And postage costs. Could keep it for anyone else who might need it.
