is it possible to fit a brighter i.e. halogen bulb to my headlamps?
They are wing mounted and are not sealed units

with the halogen conversion - will i need to uprate the wiring, or ad a relay or anything like that?
i have two original owners manuals here (one for mm and SII) with the mm one (mines a 51) saying the headlights use a 36/36. The SII says either 42/36, 36/36, 45/35
would putting in something like the standard 60/55 cause problems?

Your best option is a pair of Wipac Quadoptics which have a good beam pattern and plastic reflectors which should not rust away in a few months. They come with 60/55W bulbs which your wiring, if it is in reasonable condition, will be able to handle. Also it will not be too much for your dynamo. Do not accept any other rubbish.
While you are at it you may consider fitting a pair of plastic headlight bowls which also remove the rust trap at the front of the wings. These I think are available from Bull Motif

I have got a lovely halogen conversion from a local car spares man, which are standard 7" halogens, as suited for landrovers, mini's etc.
Don't ask 'do you have a halogen conversion for my morris minor, as they won't have one (or charge you more for the same thing)

Alternatively, various suppliers now stock halogen bulbs to fit Lucas prefocus headlamps, so you can keep the original look (if that is important to you) and still see at night....
cheers
