Alta

Post by Austin7 »

Hi,
I’ve got say up front that I don’t have a MM but as you can see from my ID I’m into Austin 7’s.

I have a query that does bridge across both cars – Alta cylinder heads. There were two types of side valve head made by Alta for the Austin 7 and I gather from the book; 'MORRIS MINOR - Exploring the legend' by Jon Pressnell there was an OHV conversion for the early MM by the same company. I’m trying to find out more about the accessory side of Alta – the Austin 7 heads specifically. While there is a fair bit of information on the web about the Grand Prix cars there’s nothing about the company in general (well....that I can find). The information in the book above and photos of the heads is about all I know; VW Derringtons bought the rights for manufacture when Alta folded in 1956 and continued making them. From adverts in magazines of the time Derringtons were still selling the Austin 7 head into the early sixties but the heads for other cars were Silvertops – another alternative aluminium head.

Is there another information source I can tap into or has someone got any more information?

Thanks Dave
Kevin

Hi Dave you have come to the right message board if you click on this link

And send Keith a PM he can probably assist you as he has even written a couple of articles on Alta heads for our club Mag Minor Matters.
Cheers

Kevin,
Thanks for the quick reply and links with photo.

I forgot to put in a link to my own website that has the photos of the Austin 7 Alta heads.

The link doesn't seem to display properly in Safari or Firefox. It comes out as an absolutely vast page that's nearly all empty space.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
