upsetting the neighbours
just thought i'd have a laugh and see how many of you upset your neighbours on a regular basis due to restoring your moggies at your house.
i live next door to a 60 year man and his mum
he's ok about my cars we often have a chat about them but his mum
she has threatened to contact the papers i've had the police round where she's complaned i've thrown something on their lawn
makes u laugh really because his lawn is immaculate and if i did u'd see a needle if it was on there it's that short lol

Actually, my neighbours quite like the various Minors that have taken up residence on my drive. They're less than impressed with the pair of 4x4's, though...

One set of neighbours are great and the others think they are great tattiest looking house in the street but new car every couple fo years and piles of tot that rarly get put away and outside his shed at the moment are 3 bikes that were new last year an electric lawnmower aslo bought last year and ourside ever since and he cant work out why it doesnt work then there is his shed roof only held up by a piece of timber from the floor and of course 2 of my fence posts so those neighbours have nothing to complain about.
Sorry about my rant.

I struck lucky with my neighbours - an elderly car nut on one side and a fairly deaf old woman on the other side.
They all think I'm mad (they may be right) but are very impressed with my car obsession.
My back garden currently resembles a scrapyard, but when I've brought the subject up, they all say not to worry about it!

I do any grinding, drilling sanding, compressor running etc inside the garage with the doors shut. I've also asked the neighbours if they are disturbed by the noise. Tend also to stop making noise by 9.30PM.
no problems so far!

"Status" is a funny thing! I think it's fair to say that most owners of Morris Minors own them because they want the car for its own sake. In my case, I wanted a regular car that I could maintain myself. Contemporary cars no longer allow me to do so. Added to this, as my annual mileage is not high, I am likely to need spares for the same car for quite some time. As Minor owners we are well served in this respect. This approach to motoring is alien to most. To most people, a car is a status symbol (Apart from being a means of transport). Along with marque, the AGE of the vehicle is critical. Therefore looking after the car is not terribly important because it will soon be "Upgraded". There are a number of people in my street who own (Or a least the HP company does!) "Poser" cars and leave them on the pavement. I consider this to be a bit like keeping coal in the bath, but to the individuals concerned, it is a way of demonstating their status in the automotive pecking order. My next door neighbour has owned Minors in the past and thinks highly of them. Being a practical type, he says he is tiring of modern cars, though I suspect he might not want to "Lose face" by buying an old one. The rest of the neighbours don't seem to pay much attention, though I suspect some view me as the one with the "Old bangers".
You have only to look at the majority of car adverts to realise that they are not aimed at car enthusiasts. Relevance does not sell cars! What on earth was the Renault Megane advert all about? What did it say about the car? To me, all it implied was that it was a car for "A***holes".
As to the reception my Traveller gets, it is quite amazing and has been a surprise. I have been an MG owners for years. Perhaps now that these cars are that much older, perhaps they get more than a passing glance now and again. They are both in A1 condition. The Traveller is something else. Far more people show an interest in the Traveller (To the pointwhere I sometimes think "Not again"). However, for every person who says "What a nice old car etc etc", there are ten who can't wait to barge you out of the way on the open road - or at least to try! It satisfies a need in people to look down on someone. Added to this they delude themselves that their modern cars are so clean and green. Those that last 20 or 30 years will reduce their environmental impact but how many of the present crop will last that long? How many owners would want them to last that long? Ignorance is bliss and it permits people to consume endlessly without appearing to "Destroy the planet". Blaming a minority is the easy option.

I wound up one of my parents neighbours.
My parents actually own a small garage in a block - which is a rarity where I live as most of the houses pre-date modern car usage, hence why I dont have my own one!
I was parked in it at the weekend with the front end poking out, doing the windscreen.
One of their neighbours wanted to park in a garage directly opposite.
I saw him coming, he had bags of room and then proceeded to make an absolute botch of it.
He mucked about for ages then parked up.
As him and his wife were walking away she called out sarcastically "Can you actually move your car - we cant get into our garage?"
My reply "Yes, of course I can"
Her husband was a little embarrassed and told me I could stay as long as I wanted.
I don't think she was too pleased.
If she had simply asked me politely to move in the first place all that hassle could have been avoided.
No doubt she'll be moaning at my Dad or at her local neighbourhood watch meeting next time.
(Note: My own neighbours are fine, but then we all get on. I couldn't live like some folk who ignore their neighbours and never speak)

My adjoining neighbours are (I assume) half deaf as they are totally incapable of talking to each other. Everything is shouted. He is also a DJ so would return to the road at 2am with a car full of speakers etc and return them to the house 1 by 1 slamming the car door shut each time. The house ( a semi) doesn't help either as it is made of brick which has been over baked and is very hard. consiquently sound travels very efficiently through the adjoining wall. So I'm not too worried about disturbing them.
On the other side I have a good relationship. they have young kids and I have always respected their peace. Nothing they have done in 5 years has ever given us cause to frown. In fct it's part of the reason I scrapped Joemog - I wasn't prepared to spoil the status-quo by grinding and welding adjacent to their 'front' door. However, Matt broke some bad news the other day. They are planning to move next year. Now, Albert's car port is on that side and the fence that forms one side of it is, according to the deeds, the property of next door (but built by me with their full co-operation), so I hope the owners to be are as understanding.

Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

In my street of 12 semi's there are....
4 motorbike nuts, of which one is into vintage stuff.
4 Classic car nuts.
2 Quadbike nuts.
.....and then there is me!

Yes, I am running it in the driveway on a saturday afternoon.
We have one miserable bloke in the close next door to me but he hasn't said a word ever since I filmed him shifting flagstones all day in his garden the same week he went sick with a bad back.

I upset my neighbours... but not intentionally. Mine is an old pre war house with a very small access road at the back. I parked UOG at the bottom of the track behind my neighbours house who were fine with it but then they moved house
UOG was parked nose first by the trees, battery flat, brakes locked on etc and in 2 inches of mud - so when the neighbours kicked off I had to get her towed out my a friend with a Land Rover! (Hence me putting her on e-bay and then subsequently changing my mind!)

I had one neighbour who always kept trying to make trouble for me with things like complaining to council, reporting me to police etc.
All the complaints were unfounded and instantly dismissed. In fact the council unoffically told me she was always complaining about everybody and not just me.
Her husband was a petrol tanker driver who worked 50 miles away.
She went around telling people that the company though so much of her husband that they had given him early retirment due to his long service.
Unfortunantley for her I knew another tanker driver from the same dept and took great delight informing everybody that in fact her husband had been caught drunk driving and was forced to take retirement or be dismissed as he had a 12 month driving ban.
They moved almost instantly and I hope it was she couldn't stand the embarrasment.
BTW The husband forgot to get their new car MOT'd when 3 years old so was procecuted for that as well as the drink driving. Made my day after she kept insinuating my cars weren't legal for all the years.
