You should really start a new thread - although there are plenty on the subject already.Perhaps a helpful Mod will come along and do that for you. Meantime - here's the diagram you need.

[frame]Image[/frame]

You will need to find that lead from the red ignition lamp. As you can see it was originally connected to the D terminal - so take it from there.

tried to fire the old girl up today all looked in good nick. had brand new fuel in a gerry can with a fresh bit of pipe direct into my pump. new spark plugs and good spark. freshly charged battery. all the ingreediants you need basicly but it wouldn't cough into life didn't even try. fuel was getting into the carb as cheched pump was working. had spark testers on and spark was good. but wouldn't fire off its own steam. it fired using brake cleaner to prime the carb but once the break cleaner was burn out it stopped running. does anyone have any ideas what might be going on?
thanks for your help

Well - obviously the fuel isn't getting into the carb - or at least not from the carb into the inlet manifold! Pour an egg-cup of fuel into the carb mouth - and crank it. Is the carb piston rising and falling ok ?

when should the piston rise? on idle? it fires using brake cleaner to start it but once it burns out the engine stops pump works fine and there was fule in the float chamber. engine runs ok with the brake cleaner. i tried with the choke fully open and working the throttle by hand and it reved etc. but only using the brake cleaner.

The piston will raise a bit on idle, more with more revs.
It sounds like the passageway from the float chamber to the jet is blocked with silt or something.
Try removing the dashpot and piston and blowing air or WD40 down the jet, that should dislodge the blockage.

Here's a cool gif I found while looking for a flow diag for an HIF;[frame]Image[/frame]

The area of interest is the right angle pipe at the bottom or it's equivalent on an HIF.

so marky what your saying is take off the top take the needle out and blow through the right angle thing at the bottom with air to clean the hole out? this seems doable is this what you mean

Can only be that the piston is sticking - or as above - there is some kind of blockage. Is the piston free to rise and fall ??

Yes, but to be honest I'm not sure what the equivalent on an HIF is, I haven't had many apart so can't be definitive.
That's the area I'd be looking given the symptoms you have.

It is petrol in the float chamber? Not just some liquid that smells like petrol, I trust.

Replace it with fresh stuff if there is any doubt.

Turning the ignition on with the float chamber off, should result in petrol in the engine bay too.

was deffinatly new fuel bought it in the yesterday morning. pump is mechanical one which was pumping. iv had the bottom of the float chamber apart has got the right angle fuel pickup in there. the piston moves up and down like a gooden. however when it had oil in it was a bit stiff. could it be somthing to do with the needle needing adjusting? but this having been said was fitted to a perfectly working engine before mine and hasn't been adjusted since i fitted it.

Needle etc adjustment won't stop it running - have you tried pouring some petrol down the carb throat - and cranking it ?

i have sprayed brake cleaner into the hole which makes it fire up straight away but once that burns out it stops running
iv since had the carb off and cleaned it out as marky desgribed. hoping this will sort it. i really cant see why it wouldn't fire on its own.

The fact that it will run on brake cleaner shows that petrol isn't getting to where it's needed for whatever reason.

carb cleaned out blone through and still doesn't pick up fuel! the float chamber gets full of petrol but thats were it stops. still runs when you prime the carb with fuel but stops when its burnt out. could there be a problem with the needle or something else internal with the carb? really dont understand whats going wrong.

The fuel level should be just below the jet when you look in from above - remove the bell and piston - switch on the pump - and look in!

since i last posted i thought beat the problem get a new carb. fitted it up today. and it started off its own steam. but after starting and running for a couple seconds it stops. did this over and over again until the battery went dead. the longest it ran for was maybe 5 or 6 seconds. would only start with the choke fully out and would rev up but dies shortly after.

any ideas what might be wrong this time? thanks everyone

Highly unlikely you have two duff carbs - so look elsewhere! And I ask again - if you pour some fuel down the carb throat - does it run then ??

the fuel pump works fine although it did have an air lock at the start of the day took it off the car and pumped it by hand after the air lock had cleared it worked perfectly. poring fuel into the mouth works fine and always has even with the old carb but with the old carb once the fuel i had pored in had been burnt the car would stop. so as it stands the pump is pumping fuel and the carb is picking up the fuel and trying to use it but will only fire and turn over for a few seconds with the choke wide open. the accelerator works as well as it will rev when running but cuts out shortly after.
