I just swapped the commutator from the original part over to the working one which had the narrower bolt holes - and it still works!

So the fault with the original SM lies somewhere within the steel body. I did test it and still nothing happens when it's given 12V directly.

I should have thought of this earlier but have been a bit lazy watching the Rugby 7s, Superbikes and a bit later the MotoGP.

To put a close on this thread, I fitted the Frankenstein of a starter motor last night and she pretty much fired immediately and ran nice and smoothly for a few minutes.

Hoping to have the same luck to get a modern car started this weekend. Unfortunately it'll be a lot more hassle to remove the SM if it's necessary.
