That's o.k. Cam - yes the worm is actually an extension of the armature which in turn engages with a nylon(that's all I've seen) edged gearwheel to which is attached a con rod connected at the end of the cable rack with a crosshead arrangement. So as doobry says it doesn't matter which way the motor turns because the rotary motion is converted to reciprocating without a specific thrust side on the crosshead. Does that make sense?

Yes it makes perfect sense and is actually what I have seen (thinking about it), but I forgot about how the motor turns the gearwheel at 90 degrees (wake up at the back there!!
). You will have to excuse me as it was a Mini 2 speed wiper motor about 10 years ago!! It seems they are pretty much the same then.... as you would expect
