BMC
I have driven a 1293cc 'S' competition mini similar to the one you describe at a St Eval sprint in the 1970s. You did not have to worry about the rear just point the steering where you wanted it to go and press the loud pedal.
Thermostat or no thermostat - 1275cc engine?

Autocross! Makes me think of the Players No 6 series. I used to marshall at the ones hosted by Cirencester Car Club. I still have my No 6 marshall's pass somewhere.
There was a twin engined special a bit like a Moke with a 'S' engine & manual gearbox in the front and an 'S' engine with auto gearbox in the rear. Nothing could beat it. Happy days.
I read that the original Rest & Be Thankful has been re-surfaced to provide a relief road in case the new road suffers a land slip which it seems prone to. Would be nice to see a speed hillclimb back there again!

Yes - I competed in the No 6 championship up here. I drove up the old Rest last August in my Traveller (TR7 had refused to start evening before - failed starter motor...) as part of an RSAC road run - possibly the last car to drive up it before it was resurfaced. And yes - it would be great to see it back in action again, although I'm not sure about safety aspects these days. I see the 'Friends of the Rest and be Thankful' has been wound up - with no mention of use for speed events.......
