I've suggested in another thread that you request help in the Wanted section, asking for transport help from Sidney '61's to you as your car is off the road.
Win it first -- be aware of last-second bidders - so do place a bid at the maximum you are willing to pay - a few seconds before the end! The good thing is - that box is not listed under Minor - so won't be that many going for it. Then worry about 'getting it' - there are various cheap collection/delivery firms - or get your mate with the Mini to go for it!
If it came off a Series II which still had its original 803 engine then I would have expected a 5.375.
Anyone know the position of the diff filler plugs on 4.55 and 5.375?
The axle I had on the car when I bought the car had a plug on the side of the diff that came out. The axle that is fitted now I had to take the screw out the top of the diff to get the oil in.

As I said. Had to take the screw out the top of mine to fill it. Any Ideas what diff this could be? When I counted the turns off the prop earlier I'm sure it was a 4.55

Make sure ALL the bolts are out (and the starter removed) - and then tug and twist. Once it's free - you must get it away from the engine - don't leave it hanging on the first motion shaft or it may damage the clutch. You need to turn it to get the top part to clear the steering rack. Usually easy enough to get the old one out - getting the new one IN is when the 'fun' starts.

you rotate the gearbox to the left
get the engine lowered as far as possible, sometimes you may need to take the heater valve off the cylinder head, and of course take off the engine steady bar
Starter is removed and I checked a number of times that all the bolts are out. The gearbox is away from the engine at the bottom but but hasn't budged at the top.
Made sure it wasn't hanging on the first motion shaft by putting a jack under the gearbox.

If you are still having fun getting the old gearbox / engine apart , there are a couple of locating dowels which can get stuck. Just try tapping the gearbox left and right and it should drop off the dowels.
Aye - but don't let it 'drop' onto the gearbox input shaft - itself by now resting on the clutch operating levers!! it must come out - and go in without messing up the clutch. This is the main reason for taking the engine out - to access the clutch/gearbox - it's SO much easier!
