Bear in mind that any sort of forced aspiration will probably increase fuel consumption quite a bit. I seem to remember GAS commenting that his car is a bit on the thirsty side. Plus personally I detest driving turbo'd cars that exhibit even mild turbo-lag, although I understand other people might not! The Garret T3 I believe is particularly bad in this respect. Not sure about superchargers though - do they lag?
I think the £40 for 70bhp figure is somewhat optimistic - I've already spent about £150 on bits for my future engine project and that's mostly secondhand stuff and without the exhaust system, camshaft or machining costs, and I'm not expecting more than about 65bhp. In the long run it pays to do things properly as there's no point in skimping only for the thing to go bang a few miles down the road!

Just spend the £40 on booze - your car will feel like it's got increased power - albeit short lived (like your licence)
Seriously, if I was going for a major increase in power I wouldn't use an A series - cheaper options out there.
£40 would buy you a 1275 head and carb with inlet manifold in most scrap yards up here - you may be lucky and fit them straight on (with new gasket) or you might have to recon them. I've no idea what actual power would be - most folk get a major shock when they get a rwhp read out.

Nope - Unlike turbos which spin up through exhaust gas pressure (and so do very little if anythnig at lower revs) a supercharger is spinning all the time as it's driven off the engine.chrisd87 wrote: Not sure about superchargers though - do they lag?
Far better in terms of response, but at even more cost mpg wise - The turbo is using "waste" energy, whereas the supercharger takes power from the engine to turn it. But if I was in the lucky position to choose one or the other, I'd have the supercharger every time. Preferably bolted through the front panel Bently style
