Surely once the timing case has been refitted, and the crank pulley put back on, the timing mark on that relative to the cover 'prongs' is the reference?
As long as that is lined up and No1 is tdc on compression, all is good?
It never occurred to me to see what piston was at the firing point ( if any) when I put the timing gears on. I didn't think it mattered!

I have read through this post. I have just rebuilt my Engine, and I think I may have the Distributor drive 180 out.. Does this matter? Can I still set the timing? When no1 cylinder in at TDC on compression the rotor arm points down,(Between7 and 8 on a clock face) so as long as the lead from there goes to No1 plug it should run??
