..as an aside the stop/tail bulbs arrived the other day and they were terrible , especially as the bulb holder places the bulb facing down at 45 degrees , but I have a plan...

On a slightly more serious note - Is the existing wiring Ok for LEDs?

Also, and perhaps slightly off (LED) topic, what about fitting halogen bulbs? Is standard wiring OK. My '62 saloon has absolutely bog standard bulbs in the headlights. Is it just a straight swop to put halogen bulbs in or do I need to modify anything? Very recently, I had an alternator fitted and the car changed to negative earth.

LEDs are low power, so draw less current (the whole original idea behind their usage) so could use a smaller gauge wire, so no problem at all.

If running extra current (higher powered halogens or other auxiliary lighting) it is better to run them through a relay, rather than risking overloading an old wiring loom. The alternator should not use the wiring loom unless designed for the higher charging current. I have never bothered to fit an ammeter on any of my vehicles - ever. If one was fitted, it might have been useful on a small number of occasions, but not on any vehicles fitted with an alternator.

I used to regularly run 100W main beam and occasionally 12OW head lamp bulbs. Technically, they are illegal.

Whether halogen bulbs are a straight swap might depend on the type of lighting already fitted! Most likely need complete fittings - the best way to get the maximum from the system.

Just fitted my Fleabay purchase from Ping-Pong , incandescent 4.6 and 3.4 Amps main and dip respectively , the Leds 0.98 amps either mode , wrong beam pattern was fixed by rotating the led unit in it's holder, am pleased ( especially as they only cost me £9 for the pair delivered to my door....so pleased in fact that I'v ordered another pair ( just in case ).
Going out for a meal tonight so will report back in the morning..

P.S. When you get them , If you're going for them , have a close look at the three pronged fitting ,it is removeable so the filament can be re-orientated...

Thought I'd try a couple of LED 'equivalent' 5W/21W Tail/Stop light replacements.
As many of them are designed for a lamp holder that points outwards, rather than downwards like the Moggie, I looked around for a lamp that looked as though it might be effective in the side-on view, rather than end-on.

The cheap and nasty ebay Chinese lamps were worse then I thought.
I'm currently messaging the supplier about them and will submit a refund demand once their excuses run out.

Unless I missed it, you never said which one you brought.
Eliminating the 6V and 24V options, and the White ones or ones with equal pin heights, I think I've got it down to one of these two, but I could be wrong.

Just recently fitted LED festoon substitutes with small pcb attached to the trafficators on my MM. Brilliant. I also got some 6v ones for the Morris 8.

After a few false starts with ebay junk, I fitted a pair of these on the Traveller they work very well and the difference betwen brake and tail light intensity is as good as normal filament bulbs.

Phil - sorry, being a bit lazy here (to avoid scrolling through pretty much all of this thread) but are the bulbs you've identified there, a direct replacement for 'standard' bulbs? Specifically, can I just replace my existing bulbs with there on my standard '62 saloon?

I would say yes these bulbs are direct replacements, but dont forget mine are fitted to traveller light fittings and face rearwards.
I read earlier in this topic that saloon bulbs face downwards, but I have no experience of those fittings myself.

What I would suggest is that you do what I did, and contact that supplier for some advice regarding the use of that bulb in a saloon.

My experience of buying the cheap ones off ebay was that there was not enough difference in the brightness between tail and brake lights, so at night you would get people running into the back of you because they did not notice your brake lights.
These bulbs do not suffer from that problem.
