Front brake shoe steady springs.

I find using a vacuum pump, I do OS front, NS front, NS rear and OS rear as the order. Works every time for me without a helper

OK, I had another look at the car today. The brake pedal still went down to the floor but could be pumped up as I mentioned before. With the handbrake off the cables are slack and I have to pull it up 4 or 5 clicks on the ratchet before the wheels are locked.

This is one of the front brakes after I replaced the parts.





I guess these are 7" drums which are correct for my 948cc model.





Today I adjusted the master cylinder push rod, you have to be careful with this and study the instruction book. But so far it seems to have taken up the slack and the pedal no longer goes to the floor... we'll see how it behaves in the morning when all the pressure will have released.





Locknut shows the original position for reference; I subsequently took it up towards the locknut again a few flats. We shall see how the brakes behave now.

Revisiting this because of the discussion over on facebook about beehives....
So for the front brakes, the AKD3541 shows the following:

This is from the Parts List up to Issue 9.
Does anyone have a latter issue?
If they commenced fitting these at 959441, that was around 1960 ish, from the little I know of Chassis Numbers.
Perhaps they were removed towards the end as Phil thinks over on page 1....

In BMC parts list AKD3575 (1967) for the 1/4 ton & 6 cwt vehicles there is a cut off point for the fitment of the pin. spring and retainer.
The above parts were only fitted to vehicles 141553 - 149536 plus 141384 - 141500.

Hey guys - just wanted to say thanks to the forum, and to those who have posted on this thread.
Until I read this, I had no idea that my 1971 6cwt van should have the bee hive shoe retainers. But armed with my new-found knowledge I re-checked the wsm, whipped a rear drum off and saw the bracket intended to receive the bee hive spring. There were none fitted when I stripped and rebuilt the rear brakes with new shoes and cylinders.
So, ordered a set and will fit them asap. Cheers. A virtual pint awaits you all in the Invisible Arms.

The final result - bee hive springs arrived from ESM by return of post.
I found them quite easy to fit once I had shortened the hook a tad, and compressed them in the vice and secured the coiled springs with little cable ties.
I found that if I got into exactly the right position, I could see behind the brake shoe and watch as I guided the hook into the slot in the bracket with a suitably-forked small scrap screwdriver.
