dont know if this will be relivant , but are all the breathers clear on the engine , im not a tec expert just a thaught , hope i dont get my knuckles rapped by the man with the mini everyone is only trying to be helpful .

I can understand how the smell of the fumes could get sucked into the car through a gap in the boot seal, but not how the fumes are visible? Presumably, from your description, the fumes are from the exhaust, so I would suggest you get someone to follow you up and down over a hilly section, and identify at what point the exhaust outlet contains colour. Particularly noting the difference in exhaust colour between full throttle and a trailing throttle.
What crankcase ventilation system have you got fitted? It should not affect the exhaust contents, but clearing out fumes at the earliest opportunity is a good idea.

the comment(SMOKE FILLED THE CABIN) had me thinking,but hesitated to reply . It would have saved all this agro, if the reply would have been ,thanks Phill but quite sure that the engine rebuild is not the problem. If roy had still been with us

Well test drive revealed no fumes after altering the seal so i have my fingers crossed.
Its not that the fumes were visible as such but miore that the air got rather unpleasant. I could definitely see a change in the air in the rear of the car. Difficult to describe but if you have ever been in a closed garage or something when someone is running an engine you will know what i mean.
Anyway, am hopeful that i am on the right track.
And i am not sure about rapping someones knuckles. I know people are trying to be helpful but thats the point isn't it?
If someone offers advce that is not particularly helpful then its fair to say so and hopefully still whilst keeping a smile on ones face. We should be able to disagree if we want to. This is a medium where the intentions behind words are lost so its important to try to offer advice that doesn't immediately pee people off i would say..

Not sure who you mean by Roy or what a naughty step is, but it does remind me of a conversation i had with a user here who left this forum because he had had enough of that kind of thing. Thats not good to hear.

There is much to miss about Roy, but excessive comments about the 'naughty step' aren't one of them, in my humble opinion. As has been mentioned, the medium of the message board isn't the best for conveying the nuances of the spoken word - I think sometimes, things don't come across as they are intended!
