Doesn't matter, as long as it's the same on both/all speakers, otherwise they'll be out of phase, and will affect the sound (hollow sounding with loss of stereo separation). One of the wires will have a black (probably) stripe on to I/D it - if the plugs on the wires aren't separate sizes (one big, one small, like the terminals on the back of the speakers) use the stripe to make sure they are all the same. Hope that makes sense! As far as I remember (may be wrong), the large connector/black stripe is positive.

The terminals on the speaker backs are normally marked + and -. The stereo unit wires will be marked + and -, so just match them up!

I agree with the large terminal usually being positive, but I seem to remember the black stripe being for negative, but as bigginger says too, I may be wrong!

Just out of interest, and to refresh my tired old memory, I did a quick google on it:

Tips:
Each speaker will have two wires - a positive and a negative. One wire will probably have a stripe on it. You can make this wire either the negative or positive, but whatever you use it for, be certain that you stay consistent with all the speakers

One would be solid green and the other would be green with a white stripe. The striped one was always the "hot" one I believe.

like z24inMA said most likely the one with the stripe will be positive.

but the striped wire is gona be the positive. or if there is a white wire or black wire that one is negative for sure.

Your speaker wire will probably be marked (+) and (-) to help you distinguish the two leads — if not, there will be some way to visually tell them apart.

(typical replacement radio wire colors: (+) Positive: Gray, (-) Negative: Gray with black stripe) ...

Be sure to
match positive to positive (red) and negative to negative (black). ...

So the 'boffins' on the World wide interweb say that both Cam and I are correct(!), but also confirm that it doesn't matter as long as you're consistent. Phew! All that training *was* worth it...
