Well spotted Panky-that went years unnoticed! I thoroughly agree with the cooling system being over engineered-it never overheated. I will inform my mate accordingly.
Let's wait and see how and if the MGB fan fits.

I guess that because the Mini fan is so small and the rad large in comparison there will be an air flow around it as the car is in motion and at idle the fan will push cooling air through, not advised for hot climates though me thinks

Over the years we've had several long hot trips to the South of France in a much laden Minor. The cars are basically over-cooled as standard so a Minor in standard form copes perfectly well in my experience IF everything is in good working order. Fitting a temperature gauge (I prefer the capillary type) is not a bad idea if you want reassurance but I would certainly suggest having the radiator properly checked or replaced/re-cored and probably the water pump too. While the water pump is off, take the opportunity to replace the by-pass hose with a length of proper heater hose DON'T rely on one of those horrible concertina type rubber hoses. Obviously check ALL the coolant hoses/heater hoses as a matter of course and replace if in any doubt.

Then. sit back and relax and enjoy the journey!
