Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
My mechanic is going to get under the car and send some pics of the gearbox to ensure it is from a minor. If the flywheel has been modified to fit the marina 1275 will it still take the 1098?

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
The reason I was asking about the fuel pump is that if the diaphragm splits on a mechanical one petrol can get into the sump and dilute the oil. This happened to me on another vehicle, the oil got that thin the pump wouldn't prime and oil pressure went. Have a sniff of your dipstick and see if it smells of petrol.

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
There was a faint smell of fuel...
Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
If the engine is running a mechanical pump then it's worth checking the diaphragm - even if it's just to eliminate it as a cause of the problem.

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
There is also a massive explosion risk...not common fortunately, but not unknown in the Mini world !

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Jeeez... scary, at least I've survived! Going to go look at a 1098 engine this week. What should I look for?
Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Unless you are allowed to lift the head -and/or the sump - it's just a guessing game... Grab this one - well worth the asking price ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Morris-minor- ... 3ceaf7d64a

Gearbox photos attached

Also note the oil is silverish.

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Looks like a normal ribbed Minor box to me, did the oil smell strongly of petrol when you drained it? When I had my problem with the fuel pump you could see the petrol vapours as it was draining into the bowl

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
It's a 1098 (or possibly Spridget 1275) gearbox -and the mechanical clutch release- so all should be fine with a standard 1098 engine. It's too thick to be contaminated with petrol - the risk is only there if the engine has the mechanical fuel pump....does it ??

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
It wasn't too strong actually, maybe not as much a ticking time bomb.
Sorry Bm, didn't see your post. I don't know if it was mechanical or not. Photos weren't taken by me.

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Just bought a 1098 with no breather on the rocker cover, can I swap it out with my 1275 marina rocker cover or do I need to get a new one with breather.
Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Straight swap. Although I doubt it's an original Marina cover anyway....

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Update,
Sorry it's been a while. 1098 in and runs pretty well. Possibly being a little overfueled by the mg metro carb though so need to play with that a bit.
Now I have a problem with my brakes. Basically the pedal is travelling all the way to the floor. There is some braking, but down near floor level. Definitely not going to stop in a hurry. The brake fluid looked gunky, so swapped that out and bled the system but still seems the same. New master cylinder time?
Also just to double check bleed order... Nsr, osr, nsf, osf?
Almost forgot to add that the car pulls to one side when what braking works.

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Pulling to side indicates a leaking or sticking cylinder - so drums off urgently to investigate. Then it's just a matter of keeping the brakes adjusted up to keep the pedal up. Don't touch the master cylinder meantime... Overfueled ??????
What size carb and what needle is in it ??

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
Sorry it seems to be running rich. It's a mg metro carb.
Will get them checked.
Will get them checked.

Re: No oil pressure and loud knocking
It is on the large side - the piston probably doesn't ever get to even half way up ! HIF 38 will be more suitable - with an AAA needle for a starting point.
