Re: distributor options
It would be a shame to scrap the A + block. Put in a good 950cc crank and an oil seal conversion on the rear to make up the deficiency of the oil return scroll and you could have the basis of a nice 998cc in line engine. The 998cc A+ block has all the attributes to make quite a good engine, add the 998cc flat top pistons and rods, a good camshaft (possibly 2A948 & yes it has 3/8" lobes), the 940 head (even a 12G295 will do), a good carb/carbs, lightened flywheel, duplex timing chain, crank damper and it will fly.

Re: distributor options
The big problem is the rear mains cap Phil - it needs more than just an 'oil seal' - so an expensive business to make a steel cap and line bore it to match the existing - and slight mod to the block to take the oil pick-up pipe - admittedly that's not too difficult - but all in all - MUCH easier to just use a 1098 Minor block to make the 998. 2A948 cam is good, but only a slight upgrade on the AEA300 - and 'not common' - only ever fitted to the 997 Cooper engine which wasn't produced in huge numbers. I think the '256' cam produced by some is to a similar spec.

If you have a A+ engine block I believe it is better to use it than scrap it even if you have to do a few mods. I hate to throw things away especially if you can make it work.
Yes I know about the rear main cap but they are available for the 948/998cc and yes it would have to be line bored. Do it at the same time as when fitting the steel centre main cap. May be expensive but you are building in reliability and making a sellable engine when it comes to upgrading to a larger cc engine. I agree the oil pick up needs to be modified but nothing is insurmountable. If there is a will there is a way. But of course it is all horses for courses.
I used a 948 cam in my first 998cc competition engine and it was a good all round choice plus the 998cc rods/comp pistons etc, etc. and the car flew

Re: distributor options
I wouldn't scrap the block - someone in Mini land will want it - perhaps not pay much for it - but it will have a use. I know the cam well - had one in an early Mini engine - but soon upgraded to a 544!
