Back to K series engines.....

The nice people from the spridget forums have finally got back to me......

The early engines have a dizzy that needs more clearence, and apparently later ones have a twin coil pack (??) under the cam cover dispensing with the dizzy. You can retro fit the later system to an earlier engine.

Also someone has used a K series with a dizzy in a spridget with no problems, and the minor has a much larger engine bay (the spridget one is a lot tighter)

What do you call later?? My 1997 Rover has a dizzy..... Hmm........ that means that at least you would have to go for a post '97 engine. Not cheap!!

Yes, I know the Minor engine bay is much wider, but it was the length of it that I was not sure about. If it's longer in the Midget then dizzy clearance might not be a problem but it might in the Minor.

I would assume JLH is using the non-dizzy type of engine then.

It's bad enough getting at the dizzy in a Rover without having it right at the back of the engine bay! I needed to change dizzy and rotor arm on my 220 (up for sale if you want it for the engine :D) and quickly decided to get an easier car to work on (hence Minerva).

I'm told of a source of low mileage K series engines in Newcastle for the best part of a grand. Allegedly they are from ex development cars (NVH / suspension development) but if anyone is desperate - I'll try and find a number.

K series engines

Post by jonathon »

Re Rover K series engines.

The K motor is as easy to fit as the A series. It is 16 kilos less in weight, so is not detrimental to the handling.
The dizzy doe not pose too much of a problem, you can either go the coil pack route or modify the battery box area. This will reqiure the battery to be re sited. We have now fitted 8 of these motors and only had head problems with one. The gasket problem centers around Rovers quest for cost cutting as they replaced steel gasket dowels with plastic ones. Needless to say when run at high temps these soften allowing gasket movement.
The K conversion is I admit not cheap. Remember we have invested nearly a year of development time and many thousands of pounds to provide our prospective customers with a high quality kit which is proven. Needless to say costs can be reduced if doing this mod DIY, remember we have to supply warranties, as DIY you take the chance.

The owners club have been asked on several occasions to review this conversion eversince 1996. So far this has not been taken up.

I dont think it would be taken as an advert Jonathan and thanks for clearing up a couple of issues with the engine installation.
Cheers

I've got no problem with the content of Jonathon's post but the website link isn't in the spirit of the T&C's and so I've removed it.

Of course a quick Google UK search will easily identify all Minor specialists and parts suppliers, including JLH.

PC? :-? Les, it's nothing to do with being pc. The removed sentence was a link to JLH's commercial website - no information in the post was deleted.

Two things to consider: 1) The club's policy precludes endorsements to any traders & 2) We don't even allow the Minor Matters traders to link to their websites on this board (even though their advertisments contribute a significant amount of money towards keeping the club solvent and this messageboard running). Hence the simple rule in the T&C's stating no traders. If you need more info, please send me a p.m

For those interested in the option of fitting the K series motor into the Minor, purchase the excellent 'Practical Performance Car' Feb issue price£3.80.
