Re: 1098cc or MG 1275cc Engine? (Fast Road/Race)
I appreciate this goes back a bit, but I am considering fitting a 1275 to a van. I propose using a 5 speed gearbox - perhaps a Ford as available from Bath. I am looking for a Morris with half-reasonable performance but really do not know how that will compare with our standard 1098 Traveller. What else should I change - which carb, which manifold? Any views/comments would be appreciated.

Just changing the 1098cc engine for the 1275cc is easy especially if you use a 1275cc Midget unit. The 1275cc Marina/Ital engine does need some modification to fit but nothing serious and all parts required are available from ESM.
As regards the increase in power output with the 1275cc engine the difference is quite noticeable but the increase in output torque with the 1275cc engine is very good.
If you manage to get a 1275cc Marina/Ital engine unit just use the Marina/Ital carb, inlet manifold and exhaust - there is no need to spend out on any other parts to get the engine running well.
Personally I would stick with the 1098cc gearbox unless you manage to get a 1275cc midget gearbox cheap.
The Ford type 9 is a good gearbox but the total cost including gearbox and fitting kit is excessive and would put me off doing the conversion now though I do have a Ford 4 speed 2000E derived gearbox in my Minor (original CSAutoClassics conversion).
Changing the diff from 4.22 to 3.9 to match the 1275cc engine is a better bet than fitting the Ford type gearbox.
Please make sure that your brakes and suspension match any increase in power output.
It is all well and good having more power and going faster but do you do need to stop and to be able to hold the road.
Please come back if you require more information.

In my experience the type 9 box is excellent if you intend to use the car as a daily driver on fast roads. It really does make the car into a capable cruiser but as Phil says,it's not a cheap option and you do need to consider how well your brakes will cope.
