I have to say, until earlier this year I had an Austin 1300 with a mechanical pump and I never had a problem with it, despite it being the original one fitted in 1973!
i've found that excessive ticking means it's got an air leak. it's sucking air as well as fuel.

Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump
It ONLY ever does it when I've been stuck in slow moving traffic for more than about 3 minutes. My first Minor used to do exactly the same thing as well. I was told it was because the heat from the engine/exhaust vapourises the fuel in the carb float chamber.ampwhu wrote: i've found that excessive ticking means it's got an air leak. it's sucking air as well as fuel.

silly me. your never wrong.
Re: Mechanical Fuel Pump
The vapourisation occurs in the suction line - because the high mounted electric pump has to 'suck' hard to lift the fuel up from the low mounted tank - this puts the fuel in the line under a lower pressure than atmosphere - and so it can 'vapourise' more easily (esp in warm conditions) forming gas - which the pump can't move. The lower mounted mechanical pump (or indeed a low mounted electric pump) eliminates all these worries.

South Norfolk can't have much traffic, it would be undrivable in the smoke.stuck in slow moving traffic for more than about 3 minutes

Long Stratton on the A140 has mile long tailbacks during rush hour, and Norwich city centre is a nightmare after 4.30pm.MarkyB wrote:South Norfolk can't have much traffic, it would be undrivable in the smoke.stuck in slow moving traffic for more than about 3 minutes
